Hitchin town centre has been named as the runner-up in the search for England's best high street at a recent awards ceremony.

Forty of the nation’s high streets were competing to be crowned the best in Britain - with shoppers believing the 'perfect' one should include a green grocer, butcher and pub.

All forty high streets were judged on the four pillars of success: Customer Service, Digital Transformation, Environment and Innovation.

The competition was very strong and after close consideration, it was Belper in Derbyshire, who were awarded the coveted Great British High Street 2019 trophy and a £15,000 cash prize to put towards a local high street initiative.

The market town of Hitchin, remains a popular destination of choice, with it's vast number of independent businesses, retailers, salons, coffee shops and restaurants.

It also hosts a market four days a week which is surrounded by leafy gardens, St Mary's Church, a band stand, tennis courts, a bowling green and a children’s play area.

Medieval architecture from the 19th century is the backdrop to this picturesque town centre with plenty of cultural events taking place.
