Feature Friday - Hitchin Road, Letchworth Garden City

Letchworth Garden City is a town known for its character, charm and buildings with architectural interest and this impressive 'Arts & Crafts' style detached house is regarded as the finest of the Letchworth houses designed by the renowned architect, M H Baillie Scott. The house retains all of its charm and character together with many of the original features including oak doors and an impressive fireplace.

Built in 1908, this Grade II listed property stands in magnificent grounds extending to 1.14 acres and offers potential for a truly outstanding home. The generous accommodation is very flexible, either as a remarkably spacious family home or as a home plus a self-contained annexe. There is also a self-contained studio flat above the garage block.

More about M H Baillie Scott:

Before coming to Letchworth in 1905 M H Baillie Scott was already a highly regarded and internationally acclaimed architect. Scott’s work is often formed of simple decorations but superior quality materials and resulted in bold internal planning with rooms opening out into each other. Scott also paid meticulous attention to minute details such as door and hinges. His individual style was based on revival of late mediaeval hall houses.

‘Corrie Wood’ Hitchin Road was the last and thought to be most sophisticated of Scott’s houses in Letchworth built in 1908 which is dominated externally by the hipped roof which sweeps down on the north front to just two feet above ground level whilst the main living rooms were arranged across the south front, dominated by large paired gables.

It is thought Scott was a large critic of the constraining byelaws of a Garden City design and the principal of the Garden City itself but when it came to building his first dwellings in Letchworth in 1905, the Elmwood Cottages, the process of obtaining consent from the First Garden City Ltd and approval from the Hitchin Rural District Council were understood to be unproblematic.
